Claire & Robert’s home

The second phase of a masterplan to rearrange the family spaces on the ground and basement floors in a semi-detached, five-storey, early Victorian house in the Barnsbury Conservation Area in Islington for a couple and their baby son.

The original rooms on the ground floor have been restored, but with a contemporary twist, to create a formal entrance hall, living, study/library/music and dining rooms. Patterned geometric vitrified ceramic floor tiling developed from an original Victorian design was laid in the hall. Built in cupboards, shelves, and desk were added in the other rooms, as contemporary re-interpretations of domestic joinery of the period.

The basement was opened up to create a kitchen and informal dining and living areas, and larder, utility room, and shower. The kitchen was arranged around a large central island, with a wall of built in cupboards and seating continuing the length of the house into the dining and living areas.
